Heritage Open Day: Backstage Tour

14th September 2019 and 21st September 2019
1.5 hour tours at 11am and 2pm
Free, although donations are greatly appreciated.

Starting at our meeting point, our curator will take you on a brief tour of Essex Police Headquarters, explaining how the site has evolved from its original design in 1903. We’ll then move on to the museum store, which houses around 90% of our collection. Our curator will explain how our collection has developed and how we acquire new items. You’ll see specially selected items usually off-limits to the public and learn how we preserve them. You’ll also hear how we use the collection today, from engaging with the local community to helping officers with cold case reviews and a vast array of research! We’ll then make our way to the museum, where you’ll get the chance to have a look around, try on real police uniform and take your fingerprints! There’ll also be an opportunity to ask us questions, either about the tour or more generally about policing in Essex. You’ll also be able to register any research or family history requests with us. If you’d like us to find a Record of Service for family members or ancestors please bring as much information as you can (e.g. name, area, DOB, approximate decade for their start and/or end date). We aim to respond to enquiries within 2 weeks.

Please note some parts of the tour will be outside. Should there be wet weather we will keep this to a minimum with a 2 minute walk to the museum store. This means we will talk about the development of the Headquarters site inside with pictures. Some parts of the tour are not accessible to wheelchair users. Booking is essential - please contact our Curator at [email protected]. Tours are for adults only, and spaces are limited to 12 people per tour. Should we get fully booked we will operate a waiting list.
